Personal Nutritional Assessment
Personal Nutritional Assessment
How do you know what you're eating is meeting all your nutritional requirements?
You may assume your diet could be better. You might guess you need to eat more of certain foods and less of others but how do you really know?
Nutritional assessment will tell you!
Nutritional (or dietary) assessment is the process of collecting and interpreting dietary information in order to make decisions about the nature and cause of nutrition related health issues that affect an individual.
It involves the recording of all food and drink intake over a period of time. I also get you to record energy and stress levels, sleep quality, mood and pain or other metrics depending on the health issues you are experiencing.
Nutritional assessment can provide invaluable information to support weight management, symptom improvement (e.g. for IBS, arthritis, mood swings and headaches), specific training goals or simply to improve general well-being. To get the full picture of what's going on, you need all the pieces of the jigsaw so you can take the right steps to improvement.
So my next question is have you ever had your diet professionally assessed? You may well have kept several food diaries in the past. Perhaps for a slimming group or personal trainer but 99% of the people I meet have not had their diet assessed professionally by a qualified nutritionist.
It's pretty easy to assume our diet is OK; thinking it's pretty good compared to what others eat etc. Or having an idea where the problem areas are........But I can tell you now, a fresh pair of eyes does wonders, particularly when they know what to look for!
Often we rate foods purely by their sugar, carb or protein content. We forget about the vitamins and minerals that are equally important, if not more so. Foods are a complex mixture of nutrients - we rarely eat foods in isolation (as in just bread, just nuts or just fish) and there are likely to be all sorts of nutrient interactions going on that you won't realise.
If you are feeling stressed, hormonal, tired or stuck on a weight plateau, a detailed dietary assessment can identify nutritional inadequacies that mean you can quickly implement dietary changes you know are appropriate and therefore more likely to work for you.
But I already track my diet...............
MyFitnessPal and most other nutritional assessment or food tracking tools can give you some insight BUT....
They won't tell you the detail.
Sure the data bases are big, so food entry is pretty easy but standard software like this won't tell you about ALL the vitamins and minerals you need to know about.
Most freely accessible software will give you Calories, carbs, fat, protein, saturated fat, poly and monounsaturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, fibre, sugar, vitamins A and C, Calcium and Iron. That's it!
The professional software that I use (Nutritics) assesses EVERYTHING you need to know (up to 258 nutrients). This is the most comprehensive system on the market for nutrition professionals.
Free online assessment tools are generic. They are designed to meet the needs of most people. That means they tend to skim the surface and don't necessarily help you get to the nitty gritty of YOUR diet. It also isn't always easy when YOU have to join the dots up yourself, linking eating and drinking, exercise, sleep and weight etc.
Something else to consider......do you consistently track all your food? Because if you don't, the data is only as honest or accurate as you are.
Long term tracking is not necessarily always helpful either. You get complacent; it becomes automatic so you lose the critical eye, or you don't feel confident about what you are supposed to be looking for in the first place. Tracking tools can actually be a distraction from the action you need to take because ticking the box to say you've recorded something is NOT always constructive.
Standard trackers also don't record the times of eating and drinking which is vital information if you are dealing with fatigue, digestive problems, hormonal imbalances, pain or stress. I get you to record this to build the most informative picture of what your body is doing and having to deal with.
Interpretation is everything
Do you know how to interpret all the nutritional information from your food tracker and use the data productively to help you stay on track with your goals? Managing your health is so much more than the Calories you consume, the carbs, sugar or protein you eat. What about all fhe vitamins and minerals that are crucial in energy making processes, your immune function and mood?
I generate a comprehensive report that not only gives you a picture of clarity about where you are right now, it links your current symptoms directly to your diet and provides an action plan stating exactly what you need to do next.
This means identifying the foods you need to eat more of or less of, alternatives you can bring into your diet and guidance on HOW to make the recommended changes to enable you to improve your diet yourself.
A professional assessment can be as short as 3 days or as long as 7. You don't need any more recording than that to identify potential nutritional deficiencies or excesses. That means less time and less hassle for you!
What does nutritional assessment involve?
First, I need your age, gender, weight, height and physical activity levels (working and exercising) etc. This assessment is personalised - I determine your nutrition requirements based on 10 variables, using evidence based guidelines.
I get you to keep a detailed log (a food diary), noting everything you eat and drink.
I ask you to log everything you have over 3-7 consecutive days. These should be ‘typical’ days so it’s best to choose a period when you have your normal routine. A longer food diary can enable weekday / weekend day comparisons to be made.
I ask you to provide a photographic log, taking pictures (and providing a description) using my online client platform, Healthie. This means you can note times, quantities, your level of hunger and mood for each meal or snack; again this is such useful information!
I then analyse this for you using Nutritics. I do the interpretation and translate this into an easily comprehensible report. It will make COMPLETE SENSE. You will be CLEAR on exactly what you need to do next.
I have always offered this service as part of my consultation practice, i.e. you must have a consultation where I go through your report BUT I'm now making this available as a stand alone service.
Because the feedback I receive is brilliant. That the report covers everything and more. That it is self explanatory. Of course if you would like some support implementing the suggested changes, I'm here to help but it's not mandatory.
The report consists of the following:
- Overview of your health and goals
- An detailed assessment of your dietary intake
- Explanation of all your macronutrient intake (carbohydrate, sugar, free (added) sugars, starch, protein, total fat, saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat intake)
- Identification of your daily and average proportions (%) of carbohydrates, fat, protein and alcohol
- Explanation of all your micronutrient intake (Vitamins and minerals and other essential nutrients like fatty acids)
- List of foods that are contributing to your current nutritional status
- Explanation of the nutrient functions that link to your health issues or current health status
- List of foods you need to eat more of
- A personalised action plan
Ultimately the report is about making your life easier and empowering you to make better food choices that work for you, emailed directly to your inbox.
This is perfect for you if.....
- You want to get clear on your current nutrition status in order to feel confident about making the right food decisions
- You want to find out why you are stuck on a weight plateau
- You want to combat tiredness and increase your energy levels
- You want to be able to balance your hormones more effectively
- You've done as much as you can with standard assessment tools like MyFitnessPal and feel they aren't helping you
- You are serious about improving your health and don't want to faff around any more
- You feel a sense of urgency about getting your diet sorted
- You are pretty clued up and self motivated to implement the action plan with confidence
This is not for you if......
- You can't commit to keeping a detailed food and drink log
- You get stressed by tracking and monitoring your food intake (this is not for everyone and that's OK!)
- You are not open minded to taking on advice
- Your confidence with food and diet is low (in which case you'd benefit from additional support, which I can also do!)
